The role of the packaging is to guarantee the integrity of food products and the preservation of nutritional and organoleptic characteristics; at the same time, it generates a large amount of waste with related environmental impacts. This work analyzes the development of new bioactive coatings and the use of chitosan-based films, which on a small scale, appear to be valid solutions to increase shelf-life, and connect the different aspects in terms of sustainability.
