This article goes over the life and work of Francesco Jovine focusing on the pivotal theme of provincial life. Although cursorily labelled as a realist, Jovine turns out to be deeply involved with the archaic culture of the Mezzogiorno and its set of values. This mythological image of the Mezzogiorno, intertwined with a close interest in the contemporary debates on the “Southern Question”, constitutes thus the very core of the poetic force of his works.
