Luoghi di strada e nodi di scambio. Una nuova visione della connettività in età romana e tardoantica

Until recently, the study of the Roman road system has been characterised by a traditional approach that privileged archaeological and topographical analysis and rested on a very reductive reading of the sources. The contamination with other disciplines (in particular, anthropology, geography and social science), the close criticism of what has been published about archaeological identifications and, above all, the 'mobility turn' have led to a multi-disciplinary approach that now allows dismissing the traditional classification of mansiones and mutationes, replacing it with concepts as 'place of the road' and 'node of exchange'. The mobility paradigm and the concept of connectivity have thus produced a more articulated and complete vision of what we can now call the 'imperial transportation and communication system’.
