This article aims to investigate the role played by Johann Schreck (1576-1630), known by his Latin monicker Terrentius. He was a keen scholar, an academician of the Lincei, a Jesuit, a missionar in China, a tireless traveller and insatiable and passionate collector of books and scientific instruments. Schreck was one of the most interesting figure both in European and Chinese cultural world of the first half of 17th century. He contributed to the spread of Euro-pean scientific and mechanical knowledge in China.
