Insediamenti industriali nella media valle del Liri. La cartiera Mancini, ex Courrier, a Isola del Liri

In Southern Lazio the energy exploitation of rivers played a considerable role in the urban and economic development of the territory, transforming the agricultural society into a pre-industrial one and leading - in the 19th century - to the construction of numerous factories. In this period in the small town of Isola del Liri there were four paper mills, two felt factories and seven woolen mill. These industrial sites were transformed and enlarged as a result of technological development, giving rise to new architectural structures in terms of type, structural characteristics and technology, in a variegated architectural system of load-bearing masonry, mixed castiron and masonry structures, reinforced concrete skeletons or prefabricated elements. This contribution, after a historical-territorial framework, analyses some specificities, with particular reference to the events of the paper mill Mancini, former Courrier, paradigmatics of this interesting context.
