The topic of the paper is a short story by D.Granin, dedicated to the fate of lyceum students: A.S. Pushkin and A.M. Gorchakov. Here is considered the composition of the story consisting of two parts. The first is dedicated to Gorchakov's career success, having in mind the life of the exiled Pushkin in the Mikhaylovskoye place. A line from Pushkin's poem starts the transition to the second part of the story dedicated to the lyceum community, where the poet had "foreseen" Gorchakov's long life and expressed his sentiment for his future loneliness, when among the people of the new generation he would be superfluous and alien. The second part tells about the opening of the monument to Pushkin and Gorchakov's reflections on the impact that society and the history of mankind give. It leaves no doubt on basic values that guide the people. The paper shows the role of the transition of the narrative in the second part to the level of improperly direct speech as an apeal to concrete, individual reflection and the tragedy of self-awareness of reality.
