In compiling the first part of the second homily for the Assumption of the Mary, Paul the Deacon refers to three different auctors, which were considered as auctoritates in the Middle Ages: Gregory the Great, Isidore of Seville, and Bede the Venerable. This study has a double purpose. Firstly, it analyzes how Paul the Deacon has used the selected passages and has organized them according both to his exegetical aims and to the formal and communicative standards of the homiletic text. Secondly, it describes the role of the medieval auctor and defines the concepts of compilation and composition with regard to the compositional dynamics of the homiletic genre.
