The article highlights the plurality of critical discourses on religion as well as of religious perspectives within the process of the Italian Risorgimento and of the subsequent nation building. The relationship between Francesco De Sanctis, who reformed radically Italian public instruction, and the Dutch scientist Jacob Moleschott, whom he introduced into Italian academy, reveals a large transnational transfert of ideological positions and scientific discourses.
