Since several years, the concept of “smart citiy” has been spreading more and more. Through the smart cities it is possible to improve the safety and efficiency of urban structures and infrastructures having a detailed knowledge of the territory. In order to create a model of Smart city it is necessary to collect and analysis data concerning the urban built environment (buildings and infrastructures) and the natural environment. The integration of these two elements requires the development of digital modelling of towns. Therefore, this contribution defines a new approach to integration between Building Information Modelling (BIM), used for the modelling of buildings and infrastructures, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the realization of integrated models for documentation and analysis of urban heritage. It was developed a methodology on the Autodesk InfraWorks platform to ensure interoperability of BIM and GIS systems. The shown analysis presented in this research highlights the importance of such integration especially for operational decisions for the management of the territory and sharing the historical knowledge about the town of San Pietro Infine, chosen as a test case for the project.
