Abstract · On Boredom as Stimmung in Chekhov · This article aims to read Chekhov’s A Boring Story (1889) in light of the philosophical analysis of boredom done by Martin Heidegger in his 1929-1930 university course, The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics. World, Finitude, Solitude. According to Heidegger, it is precisely profound boredom that can reveal the true character of our being in the world (finitude of existence, radical solitude, isolation, as well as the chronic disorientation of Dasein). The article suggests that, according to Chekhov, the self-reassuring escape to this or that ‘worldview’ is the main cause (and indeed the content) of deep and unbearable boredom. Chekhov also dedicated the earlier (1886) short story The Boredom of Life to such desperate attempts to escape into various ‘visions of the world’.
