In the first part of this paper S. Gentile outlines the history of the Medicean private library after the fall of the Medici family (1494) and tries to establish the differences and relations between the two known versions of the so called Vigili’s inventory. In the second part D. Speranzi discusses the uncertainties and difficulties that make often a hard task the identification of the items in this catalogue with the Greek manuscripts now scattered in various libraries all over the world. The paper ends with an example of what the edition of the inventory that the two authors are preparing together will look like.

Abstract

In the first part of this paper S. Gentile outlines the history of the Medicean private library after the fall of the Medici family (1494) and tries to establish the differences and relations between the two known versions of the so called Vigili’s inventory. In the second part D. Speranzi discusses the uncertainties and difficulties that make often a hard task the identification of the items in this catalogue with the Greek manuscripts now scattered in various libraries all over the world. The paper ends with an example of what the edition of the inventory that the two authors are preparing together will look like.
