The article conceptualizes the active city approach in the light of the perceptive-qualitative vision (Lynch, 2001) and tools that can be used for interpreting the urban environment. Beginning from a socio-political analysis, the article describes experiences of survey carried out at international level aiming at the delineation of criteria for planning active urban environment. Among them, the themes of the looseness and tightness, adaptability and flexibility, space/place discourse, and ICTs are highlighted.
