The present contribution capitalizes on studies which made it possible to over- come Bachtin’s idea of the medieval novel being confined in a world of fairy tale, sep- arated from history, geography, reality in general, so as to maintain that the timespace of knightly adventure reflects a narrative mechanism of synchronicity based on reverse causality. in particular, it will be shown that chrétien de Troyes defines a plan of nar- rative necessity by establishing consistent premises which depend on the expected out- comes rather than vice-versa. Provided evidence from the Chevalier de la Charrette, the Chevalier au Lion and the Conte du Graal will show that the skillfull craft of medieval verse novels essentially defines dramatic irony also known as suspence in the very same way a Hollywood blockbuster actually does.

Abstract
The present contribution capitalizes on studies which made it possible to over- come Bachtin’s idea of the medieval novel being confined in a world of fairy tale, sep- arated from history, geography, reality in general, so as to maintain that the timespace of knightly adventure reflects a narrative mechanism of synchronicity based on reverse causality. in particular, it will be shown that chrétien de Troyes defines a plan of nar- rative necessity by establishing consistent premises which depend on the expected out- comes rather than vice-versa. Provided evidence from the Chevalier de la Charrette, the Chevalier au Lion and the Conte du Graal will show that the skillfull craft of medieval verse novels essentially defines dramatic irony also known as suspence in the very same way a Hollywood blockbuster actually does.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
