Aims of this book include the presentation of the archaeological and environmental data from Gobero. The Gobero area is located ca. 160 km east of the oasis of Agadez, southeast of the Air massif and southwest of the erg of Tenere, at the southern limits of the present Sahara desert. It consists of eight sites, five of which, G1, G2, G3, G5 and G8, revealed funerary and habitation remains. Furthermore, remnants of palaeolake beds with scattered archaeological artefacts were found at G4, G6 and G7, which are located in the periphery of the main sites, G1 and G3. Immediately south of the main archaeological area, the Mazelet fault scarp allowed the formation of the palaeolake and favoured the outlet of groundwater. This chapter provides an outline of past research on the prehistory of Niger and of the cultural attributions of the prehistoric complexes recorded in this country in order to contextualize Gobero in the regional prehistory. It then describes the excavation and survey methods applied in the 2005 and 2006 field seasons and presents the excavated sites and their archaeological features.
