Walahfrid Strabo and Biblical Exegesis: Pupil or Master? A Study Based on the Commentary on the Catholic Epistles

This paper presents the findings of a study of the unpublished Commentary on the Catholic Epistles attributed to Walahfrid Strabo. The evidence collected demonstrates that this work, which until now had been considered to be of uncertain authorship, was in fact composed by him. Despite its appearance as a continuous commentary in the manuscript tradition, its structure reveals that it originally consisted of a series of marginal glosses accompanying the biblical text. Their transcription was subsequently carried out independently by two copyists, who drew on the same antigraph. Furthermore, the essay seeks to provide a more comprehensive delineation of the intellectual figure of Walahfrid, with a view to establishing the contribution he made to the study of the Bible and the manner in which he utilised the sacred text as an instrument of theological, moral and political education.
