This essay aims to grasp the exact meaning of Old English terms related to Anglo-Saxon culture: not only Angelcynn, but also its synonyms, as well as Englisc, their language, and Angelþeod “the English people.” Considering how words have been employed in relevant Old English Prose texts, their context of use and their specific connotation, this will hopefully help to take exact consciousness of their perception in the Early Middle Ages, avoiding improper use as well as improper censorship, therefore promoting a “philological” process of awareness able to contribute to the international debate about a correct handling of these concepts.
