Abstract

The article shows that, after the October Revolution, there was a theoretical reflection in Russia on the appropriateness of illustrating literary texts. Tynjanov's essay on Illustrations (1923) can be regarded as a new Laocoon: its iconoclastic pathos is based on the critique of Potebnja's theory of the image, also expressed in the same years by Shklovsky, Mandelstam, Bakhtin and Vygotsky.
