The state of the art on villas in the late Roman and post-classical period, in particular in Lazio, is briefly reviewed. The events that led to the organisation of the International Study Day in Castro dei Volsci in June 2022 and the publication are recounted. The general themes that are addressed in the volume are set in the context of the different threads: updates from recent excavations and research, regional contextualisation and analyses of particular aspects. The most interesting updates are discussed, both with regard to architectural adaptations and functional transformations and productive conversions, as well as chronological, property and landscape management aspects. Macroscopic phenomena, such as the appearance of burials within spaces originally intended for habitation and the insertion of places of worship, are reviewed, framing the phenomena within the broader ultra-regional contexts.
