Ippolito Nievo's (1831-1861) literary production is closely associated with his growing military and political commitment, resulting in his participation in Garibaldi's expeditions: the Lombardo-Veneto campaign in 1859 and then the Expedition of the Thousand. This essay will deal with the poetical transcription of Nievo's politico-military commitment, based, also in the period preceding those crucial years, on ambivalent metaphors and images. There is a coded language, mostly based on love metaphors, used to refer to Risorgimento political themes, while avoiding censorship. These metaphors emerge already in Nievo's first collection (Poems, 1854), starting from the dedication to his beloved Matilde Ferrari, a member of a notoriously liberal Mantua family, and reaching the last collection, Garibaldian Loves (1860), since its title.
