Like Victor Frankenstein’s creation and Mary Shelley’s novel, Penny Dreadful belongs to Frankenstein’s «progeny» in assembling a series of literary, para-scientific and cultural sources that, in the end, successfully fit together, so as to «prosper». John Logan’s interest in those who deviate from the social, sexual and cultural norm is thus coherent with Mary Shelley’s decision to let the «daemon» speak and to express his point of view (as the Creature does at length in the course of the novel), so that in her novel she lets «the subaltern speak».

Abstract

Like Victor Frankenstein’s creation and Mary Shelley’s novel, Penny Dreadful belongs to Frankenstein’s «progeny» in assembling a series of literary, para-scientific and cultural sources that, in the end, successfully fit together, so as to «prosper». John Logan’s interest in those who deviate from the social, sexual and cultural norm is thus coherent with Mary Shelley’s decision to let the «daemon» speak and to express his point of view (as the Creature does at length in the course of the novel), so that in her novel she lets «the subaltern speak».
