APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL METHODS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION CONTROL OF EARTH DAMS Safety of earthworks largely depends on the physical and mechanical soil properties. The role of construction control therefore becomes essential in order that the design specifications are satisfied by the geotechnical work. After a brief review on the control methods, in the paper statistical methods and instruments used for the construction control have been introduced. The results of a statistical analysis on the data collected during the construction of the impervious core of the Locone Earth Dam construction have been reported. Control charts for the construction process (excavation, placement, compaction) have been represented in terms of water content of the soil. The data show a general satisfaction of the specification requirements of the construction process and the progressive efficiency of the operative procedure, resulting in a less and less spread of control data.
