The limits of a sheet metal stretching process are mainly two: i) it determines tears in a little formable material; ii) it produces a non-uniform thickness distribution in the formed component. For this reason, this work presents encouraging preliminary experimental results on a stretching process of an aluminium alloy sheet that has a variable thickness. This sheet was machined by removing material from a commercial sheet of constant thickness. The obtained results show how the use of a sheet with a variable thickness allows to increase the material formability and to manufacture a product characterized by a more uniform thickness.

Abstract

The limits of a sheet metal stretching process are mainly two: i) it determines tears in a little formable material; ii) it produces a non-uniform thickness distribution in the formed component. For this reason, this work presents encouraging preliminary experimental results on a stretching process of an aluminium alloy sheet that has a variable thickness. This sheet was machined by removing material from a commercial sheet of constant thickness. The obtained results show how the use of a sheet with a variable thickness allows to increase the material formability and to manufacture a product characterized by a more uniform thickness.
