The paper aims to explore the suspended, almost timeless, and apparently illusory dimension where sometimes the emotion of joy is performed on the tragic scene. In particular, I propose to examine how in Euripidean tragedy the feeling of joy is represented through two deeply connected elements: the dream and the surprise. In the recognition scenes of Iphigenia in Tauris and Ion the disbelief, following the surprise of the recognition, provokes in Iphigenia and Creusa the deceptive suspect that Orestes’ and Ion’s presence is apparent and groundless as the inconsistent substance of a dream, whereas the source of this unexpected joy is true and real.

Abstract
The paper aims to explore the suspended, almost timeless, and apparently illusory dimension where sometimes the emotion of joy is performed on the tragic scene. In particular, I propose to examine how in Euripidean tragedy the feeling of joy is represented through two deeply connected elements: the dream and the surprise. In the recognition scenes of Iphigenia in Tauris and Ion the disbelief, following the surprise of the recognition, provokes in Iphigenia and Creusa the deceptive suspect that Orestes’ and Ion’s presence is apparent and groundless as the inconsistent substance of a dream, whereas the source of this unexpected joy is true and real.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
