This paper discusses how in Euripides’ Phaethon the emotion of fear is linked to the discovery of the truths and the lies of the characters on stage. The mysterious βαρὺς φόβος evoked in the parodos (fr. 773.49-50) can be connected and explained with the ephemeral balance between truth and lie that characterizes some fragments of the tragedy. In fr. 773.1-18 Phaethon suspects that Klymene is lying to him about divine paternity; then, after Phaethon’s death, in fr. 781.1-13 Klymene, worried that Merops can learn her deceptions, orders the concealment of the corpse frantically.

Abstract
This paper discusses how in Euripides’ Phaethon the emotion of fear is linked to the discovery of the truths and the lies of the characters on stage. The mysterious βαρὺς φόβος evoked in the parodos (fr. 773.49-50) can be connected and explained with the ephemeral balance between truth and lie that characterizes some fragments of the tragedy. In fr. 773.1-18 Phaethon suspects that Klymene is lying to him about divine paternity; then, after Phaethon’s death, in fr. 781.1-13 Klymene, worried that Merops can learn her deceptions, orders the concealment of the corpse frantically.File in questo prodotto:
