This study arises from the discovery of the Inventio sive Translatio s. Marci Atinensis by Pietro Diacono, that has been found in a fragment belonging to a late 12th century Cassinese manuscript (which was already known to the 16th and 17th centuries scholars interested in the Atinatum gesta). The Inventio is one of the hagiographic texts written by Pietro to celebrate the saints of the city of Atina. The retrieval of the manuscript contain- ing the work of Marcoantonio Palombo (1570/1575-1640), dedicated to the history of the Atinate church, has been crucial for reconstructing the entire textual dossier. The analysis of the Cassinese manuscript and of its later witnesses led to clarify the transmission dynam- ics of the Inventio and to establish that the texts contained in the dossier had an au- tonomous circulation. Thus, their structure in the manuscripts does not constitute the faithful recovery of a previous aggregation, but represents an innovation. The study con- tains the critical edition of the text.
