Abstract

Since the early Middle Ages pilgrims used to turn to Saint Michael to ask for help thanks to his function of intercessor with God. Thus, he is represented in medieval Germanic sources both as an angel of salvation and as a warrior in command of the celestial army. This paper offers an overview on Latin and vernacular texts which reveals the crucial role of the archangel in the process of assimilation of Christianity among those people who did not at all consider him alien to their culture.
