Urban agriculture provides a complementary strategy to reduce urban poverty and food insecurity and enhance urban environmental management, contributing to local economic development. From an ecological perspective, urban agriculture presents many advantages and introduces new methods and strategies for a sustainable production, providing effective solutions to increase crop performance, to enhance the tolerance of plants against stressors, to safeguard the nature, biodiversity and quality. Besides, urban garden plays an important role in favouring social inclusion, providing a medium for learning experiences, educational programs, and youth development opportunities. The present study intends to analyze the benefits and the limitation of community gardens in terms of environmental sustainability, social impact and health.
