In this study, the dam-break problem was investigated in the case of a downstream contraction. A comparison was made between numerical analysis and experimental results through free surface profiles. Free BASEMENT software based on 2D shallow water equations with HLL Riemann solver was used to obtain numerical results in terms of water surface profiles. Image processing method was used to determine the experimental results. It was observed that the results of the two methods are in good agreement. It was concluded that analysis based on 2D shallow water equations is a good alternative to using 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations that required advanced processor technology.

Abstract

In this study, the dam-break problem was investigated in the case of a downstream contraction. A comparison was made between numerical analysis and experimental results through free surface profiles. Free BASEMENT software based on 2D shallow water equations with HLL Riemann solver was used to obtain numerical results in terms of water surface profiles. Image processing method was used to determine the experimental results. It was observed that the results of the two methods are in good agreement. It was concluded that analysis based on 2D shallow water equations is a good alternative to using 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations that required advanced processor technology.
