The article focuses on jargon lexis used in a literary text to create a character or as a means of building up expressiveness in a text. It is noted that this layer of Russian lexis in "Elbow" is not a literary device but the natural way of narration. The article reviews the use of prison jargon by the main character / narrator in the text. The work uncovers a clear link between the use of jargon in the main parts of the text and the goal of creating the image of an antagonist. The prison jargon certainly prevails, however the text contains though a very limited quantity of school and student slang as well. Furthermore, a jargon terms have proved to be predominantly nouns.
