Crystal evolution of portlandite, Ca(OH)2, upon aging of lime putty has been investigated by slaking quicklime (CaO) with an excess of water for 12 and 36 months, respectively. At longer exposure of lime putty to water, a self-assembled of 3D plate-like portlandite crystals forms platy habit aggregates more rich of lamellae. In spite of the crystal size reduction and of the increase of the surface area of portlandite upon aging, the crystallization as aggregates allows to reach a more thermodynamically stable state. In addition, the agglomeration of the platelike crystals forms aggregates characterized by intra-aggregate pores smaller in size upon aging so favouring their interaction force with the water retention.
