The study focuses on the wide range of diversification and qualification trajectories of agricultural products in urban and suburban areas. In urban centres, farms suffer from competition for land use and qualification and diversification therefore become compulsory strategies to survive. In order to analyse changing agricultural land use and types of farms in urban/suburban areas, we will verify the dynamics of agricultural specialization as recorded in the last two censuses of Italian agriculture. At the beginning of a new rural development programming period running from 2014 to 2020, policy implications will be discussed in order to evaluate the possibility of stimulating virtuous farm development paths in urban and suburban areas.
