The experimental results of tests carried out on very dense gravels with two large triaxial apparatuses are presented. The availability of extremely accurate measures allowed the analysis of the mechanical behaviour from very small strains to failure along different stress paths. The results were interpreted by separately looking at the elastic and plastic strain components, stressing the role that the adopted assumptions have in modelling soil response. Even though laboratory experiments cannot attempt to investigate and reproduce all possible soil responses, complex testing was used to get an insight in the essential features of the behaviour of dense gravels. It is only by adopting such a complexity at the research stage that confidence in simple approaches can increase.

Abstract
The experimental results of tests carried out on very dense gravels with two large triaxial apparatuses are presented. The availability of extremely accurate measures allowed the analysis of the mechanical behaviour from very small strains to failure along different stress paths. The results were interpreted by separately looking at the elastic and plastic strain components, stressing the role that the adopted assumptions have in modelling soil response. Even though laboratory experiments cannot attempt to investigate and reproduce all possible soil responses, complex testing was used to get an insight in the essential features of the behaviour of dense gravels. It is only by adopting such a complexity at the research stage that confidence in simple approaches can increase.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
