Ceria based ceramic electrolytes can be considered one of the most promising solid electrolyte materials for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs). In this work nanocrystalline ceria electrolytes doped with 20 mol% samaria (Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9) were synthesized by two different co-precipitation techniques: the first using ammonia solution as precipitating agent and the second one using urea as precipitating agent, upon its thermal decomposition. From the as-synthesized powders a simple calcination step at 600 °C gives a fluorite single phase materials with a nanometric size. However, some differences appear in the sintering behaviour, and a well densified pellet was obtained only for the sample prepared by urea co-precipitation. The first electrical characterization show that this material is interesting for use in IT-SOFC.
