In this paper we try to answer these questions by describing the origins, the theoretical basis and the scientific impact of Alan Turing's theory on pattern formation .The picture that emerges is that of a highly topical theory, that still fascinates because of its strong interdisciplinary features and for the many advances that it has allowed to obtain in mathematics as well as in chemistry and in biology.
