Contrary to received interpretations, insisting that Lamarck's evolutionary views were forgotten if not derided during the period 1810-1840, it is argued that the opposite is true. Systematic perusal of a wide range of sources (periodicals, encyclopaedias and dictionaries, correspondences) illustrates the interest towards Lamarck's evolutionary theories in circles of medical writers, religious commentators and literary celebrities.
