The devices measurement and accounting are not always capable of directly measuring the energy (e.g. gas meters are only capable of measuring volume). Furthermore it is not possible to know in real time, and often nor monthly, the energy consumptions and then to relate the different information to the different energy systems to know their actual performance. On the contrary, these features are typical of smart energy meters that are capable of directly measuring quantities and of transmitting in real time the consumptions (electric energy, thermal energy, natural gas, water), also interacting with supply functions. This paper analyses the problems related to smart meter application in cogeneration systems. After a brief recall of the reference scenario in terms of needs and of applicable standards, the paper describes the main metrological problems of the involved energy measurement (electrical, thermal, and natural gas). Attention was then paid to the communication protocols that can be used in this application. Finally the main benefits coming from the introduction of smart metering in cogeneration system are described and commented.
