A new constitutive model or bimodular materials as applied to thick laminated composite plates is evaluated. The bimodular constitutive model proposed is based on energy considerations. A displacement finite element model of the first-order shear deformation theory and a bimodular constitutive model proposed by the authors and the one proposed by Bert are developed herein. The von Karman nonlinear strains are also included. Numerical results for displacements and stresses of two-layer cross-ply (0(90) and angle-ply (-45/45) square plates are presented which compare the constitutive models of the authors and Bert.

Abstract

A new constitutive model or bimodular materials as applied to thick laminated composite plates is evaluated. The bimodular constitutive model proposed is based on energy considerations. A displacement finite element model of the first-order shear deformation theory and a bimodular constitutive model proposed by the authors and the one proposed by Bert are developed herein. The von Karman nonlinear strains are also included. Numerical results for displacements and stresses of two-layer cross-ply (0(90) and angle-ply (-45/45) square plates are presented which compare the constitutive models of the authors and Bert.
