The advent of machines, the logic of profit and the economic liberalism are among the main causes of landscape changes, with a process progressively increased starting from the post-industrial transformation. The massive demand for raw materials during the postwar reconstruction and the subsequent process of modernization have also had their deepest effects on the Italian territory, producing an uncontrolled proliferation of mining sites, which resulted particularly invasive for the landscape. In recent years, after the concept of "sustainable development" has been widely acknowledged, noticeable attention has been put into tools for the knowledge, analysis and management of the territory with the aim of monitoring and regulating the exploitation of local resources and for the planning of actions to protect and improve the landscape. The study presented herein contains the results of an analysis conducted on the marble district of Coreno Ausonio, an area located in the territory of the five municipalities of the southern Lazio and including 82 mining sites. The modification of the landscape, characterized by deep geometric and chromatic changes, is evident from a distance of several kilometres. In order to perform this analysis, a large amount of different data has been collected and inserted in a comprehensive Geographical Information System. The system has been specifically designed on a standardized basis (ISO 19100 and UNI EN933-1) to combine on a digital three-dimensional map the heterogeneity, dynamism and dimensionality of the process. A standard evaluation method [Environmental Sustainability Index], has been also introduced in the same software with some modifications to evaluate the sustainability of the excavation process. The aim of this research is to customize a method for a complete and faster analysis of different data with the final goal of planning actions for the requalification, reuse and restoration of quarrying sites, in the direction of sustainability.
