Purpose – The purpose of this research is to aim to understand the meaning of knowledge and, at the same time, which are its strategic elements in network economy. In this direction, the networks are based on open and distributed hierarchies; they use new information technologies; they share and exchange information and knowledge in order to create value and of obtaining a consistent competitive differential. In light of this, the concept of knowledge is analyzed, demonstrating the role it has in the current economic setting. In this vein, the nature of knowledge, and procedures of production, transfer and diffusion of knowledge, will be investigated. Methodology/approach – The research, qualitative in nature, was developed through the study of national and international literature. Findings – The research presents many theoretical evidence that the study of knowledge may provides. Originality/value – This approach should consider some empirical evidence in the field of public organization.
