The paper reports an experimental study aimed at evaluating the potential of pattern recognition techniques when establishing the authorship of documents in case of disguising writers. The experimental work has been motivated by a conjecture about the role played by different cognitive processes involved in the production of handwriting, either genuine or disguised, on the shape of the handwritten specimen. This study has been carried out in the most general case when no assumptions can be made on both the number of writers and the number of documents, genuine or disguised, produced by each writer. The experimental results on a set of documents provide an assessment of the performance of the proposed method and allow evaluating the extent to which they support the underlying conjecture.

Abstract
The paper reports an experimental study aimed at evaluating the potential of pattern recognition techniques when establishing the authorship of documents in case of disguising writers. The experimental work has been motivated by a conjecture about the role played by different cognitive processes involved in the production of handwriting, either genuine or disguised, on the shape of the handwritten specimen. This study has been carried out in the most general case when no assumptions can be made on both the number of writers and the number of documents, genuine or disguised, produced by each writer. The experimental results on a set of documents provide an assessment of the performance of the proposed method and allow evaluating the extent to which they support the underlying conjecture.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
