Abstract. According to Heraclides Ponticus (fr. 58 Wehrli2), the important member of Kerykes Hipponikos (I) was nicknamed Ἄμμων. Scholars see it as a reference to the god Ammon, assuming a consultation or frequentation of the oracle of Siwa by this Athenian already around 530-500 a.C.: but this explanation is unlikely, because other testimonies about the spread of the cult of Zeus Ammon are much later, nor does a consultation by Hipponicus seem plausible in the historical context of that period. It is much easier to explain Ἄμμων as a derivation from ἄμμος (according to the rules concerning the formation of nicknames): sand was an important element of the hippotrophia for which Callias I, father of Hipponicos, was famous throughout Greece. The mocking function of this nickname, besides, fits well with testimonies dating to early fifth century a.C. which show aversion towards aristocratic hippotrophia.
