The paper analyses Piero Calamandrei’s contribution to European federalism and the process of supranational integration to ensure peace and justice among peoples. Beyond the criticisms of naivety and utopia often levelled at federalists, Calamandrei’s reflection arrives at the concrete themes of solidarity and social justice, from which the European Union can still draw the propulsive force that characterised its origins.
