This article aims at illustrating the various meanings of the word according to the contexts in which it was used in the ‘alfredian’ version of the Soliloquies, of the Pastoral Care, of the Consolation of Philosophy and other related texts. Perfectly conscious both of the etymological origin of the word both of the meaning of the Latin terms it was reffered to, the translator developed new interesting ways of expressing ideas and concepts found in the sources.
