Because of the fluctuating behavior of the renewable sources, the energy storage systems are considered one of the best solution for the off-grid power supply and their development allows a better and faster diffusion of renewable plants [1]. The purpose of this study is analyze the performance of a stand-alone hybrid renewable power generation system that consists of a photovoltaic (PV) unit, a reciprocating engine (RE), a storage system (EES) and electronic control unit (ECU). Two storage technologies have been proposed and studied: a) the hydrogen-based storage; b) the compressed air energy storage (CAES). Thus, the performances of two plant configurations have been compared. Moreover, the comparison with a PV power plant without a storage system has been carried out.
