The aim of the paper is to analyze the role of form finding and structural optimization in the preliminary design of grid shell canopy structures. In particular, starting from an exam of the main parameters to consider when these techniques are used in the design of grid shell canopy structures, the authors propose a two-stage approach combining form finding and structural optimization techniques. With respect to classical approaches, where form finding and structural optimization are used as independent techniques, the proposed approach demonstrates a greater efficiency in obtaining lighter design solutions while respecting specific performance requirements.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to analyze the role of form finding and structural optimization in the preliminary design of grid shell canopy structures. In particular, starting from an exam of the main parameters to consider when these techniques are used in the design of grid shell canopy structures, the authors propose a two-stage approach combining form finding and structural optimization techniques. With respect to classical approaches, where form finding and structural optimization are used as independent techniques, the proposed approach demonstrates a greater efficiency in obtaining lighter design solutions while respecting specific performance requirements.
