The effects of different mineralizer solutions, characterized by different pH, on the hydrothermal synthesis at relatively low temperature (i.e. 140 °C) of ceramic powders formed by gadolinium-doped ceria with 10% Gd dopant is analyzed. Three different mineralizer solutions were used: acidic solution (with HCl) at pH 1, neutral solution (with de-ionized water) and basic solution (with KOH) at pH 13. Powders obtained from the three different pH conditions were characterized by XRD, DTA-TG, and TEM observations, and their electrical behavior was ascertained. Even if all the samples consist of a single phase fluorite cubic ceria, significant differences appear both in their thermal behavior and in their electrical behavior so that the best sample in terms of both sinterability and electrical properties is synthesized by using neutral solution as mineralizer.
