It is rather common to argue that Lamarck's views were neglected and opposed in view of their religious implications and political tendencies. Historical evidence proves that religious and political views were considered as dangerous as a function of the social status of the actor. Examples are given of authors who openly declared their atheism, or supported evolutionary views of nature, who were not persecutes nor ostracized. An historiographic revision is therefore put forward.

Abstract

It is rather common to argue that Lamarck's views were neglected and opposed in view of their religious implications and political tendencies. Historical evidence proves that religious and political views were considered as dangerous as a function of the social status of the actor. Examples are given of authors who openly declared their atheism, or supported evolutionary views of nature, who were not persecutes nor ostracized. An historiographic revision is therefore put forward.
