Purpose: The aim of the proposed research is to understand the concept of network in order to investigate the possible configurations public networks can assume. Specifically, the study focuses on networks in which a university institution is present: The latter functions as a catalyst of knowledge and a creator of local public value. The study proposes to define the role of the university with reference to the territorial context and the economic social impact its activities produce. The research question is this: What are networks? In the view of the New Public Governance, what is the role of the univerity within the network? Is it possible to identify a reticular model valid at the international level? Methodology/approach: The research, qualitative in nature, was developed through the study of national and international literature. Findings: The paper presents substantial theoretical evidence through the study of networks and the creation of public value.. Originality/value: The scientific approach proposed presents some empirical evidence from the university environment. However, the need for further study along similar lines of valid case studies in the international sphere is indicated.
