Abstract

The experimentation with steel in the Italian architecture and design, has had, as you know, a very painful starting especially in the construction industry. Until the first half of last century, in fact, the structure appeared only in some steel works, made almost as a prototype, for their significant contribution to experimental, but still not high enough for a competitive industry to the traditional Construction of reinforced concrete and masonry. But things were changing in the late fifties and early next decade when there had been a remarkable revival of the steel construction due on the one hand the strengthening of the steel industry that made the conversion from war production, providing a greater amount of steel, and the other to greater awareness of the technical qualities of this material also in respect of its relationship with the architectural language. These changes are reflected in a number of important achievements, significant works signed by established designers, whose analysis identifies three areas of applied research in which the steel architecture finds ample space: the architecture of the curtain wall, structural expressionism and the steel works, the theme of large steel structure that has assumed, in recent years, a central role in both structural and architectural. Within this general framework, parallel startup takes a significant effort to industrialization of the construction sector, with particular reference to the material of steel, in which in the Sixties and Seventies were struggling a lot. The memory will deepen the innovative aspects related to the testing of Italian steel architecture of the second half of the twentieth century, through the analysis of some works considered most representative for which you can highlight specific design is interesting in terms of construction and architecture.
