From a general point of view, if an electrical drive is considered, it is important to extend the concept of power quality to the load side too, that is to the output performances of the drive. This paper presents a first attempt to minimise the torque ripple of inverter fed induction motors. The torque ripple is expressed as function of the notches introduced in the output voltage waveform of a VSI and it is minimised by finding out the optimum modulation pattern. This technique is compared with the typical sine-triangle PWM one on the basis of the same number of commutations per cycle. The numerical results show that a significant torque ripple reduction can be achieved if it is assumed to be the main goal of PWM.
